Spartan Race's U.S. National Series final event occurred on July 20th at Snowbasin Resort in Huntsville, Utah. This race was the culmination of the 5-race points series that took athletes to Jacksonville, Alabama, Seattle, and Big Bear throughout the 2019 season.
Going in to Utah, Ryan Atkins had an iron-grip points lead on the men’s side, requiring him to get 46th place or worse to lose his #1 spot as series champion. For second and third place in the point series, however, a tight battle would happen between Johnny Luna-Lima, Ryan Kempson, Ryan Kent, and Tyler Veerman.
After 74 minutes on the 8.3 mile course, Johnny Luna-Lima edged out Ryan Atkins for the podium, getting first at Utah, and second overall in the points series. About 20 seconds later, Ryan Atkins crossed the finish, earning second at Utah, but dominating the U.S. National Series overall with first. Within the next minute, Tyler Veerman crossed the finish line, earning third at Utah, and securing fifth in the points series.
Utah Super Men's #gearlist:
Snowbasin Ski Resort's course featured 2,400-ft of elevation gain, all of which was in the first 3.9 miles. This meant that the second half of the course was almost entirely downhill, on craggle-y terrain consisting of gravel single track & fire roads. All three of the men's podium finishers chose shoes with with climbing lugs and / or rock protection. These types of shoes are critical for keeping your feet in-tact on steep climbs & descents.
